New media- “the bleeding age of obsolescence”

The idea of “new media” and how its definition constantly changes is being explored. There is a non-simultaneousness to the “new”. Digital Media makes the permanent, “an enduring ephemeral”. The two words which make up this phrase are directly contradictory which at first doesn’t make sense, however when employed into the idea of new media it fits the criteria as new media is contradictory itself. Chun’s work talks about the web3.0 and how information and meaning will start coexisting. The paper continues on the topic of “memory” as the main aspect in digital media. Chun talks about the organization of digital media and how John von Neumann refers to memory as an organ rather than a place of storage, in his “First draft of a report on the EDVAS” (1945). In conclusion, the memory of technology products is and isn’t permanent, the constant upgrades assure that their “ephemerality endures”.
